Apigenin is a polyphenol. It is one of the flavonoids found in many human foods. This compound has been widely studied for its anti-cancer properties, and it even has anti-tumor properties that other flavonoids do not.
Many fruits and vegetables contain this compound, especially celery, cilantro, bok choy, and green peppers. Fruits that contain flavonoids include cherries, apples and grapes. In addition, red wine and tea such as chamomile also contain some apigenin.
Apigenin, like most flavonoids, has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-spasticity, and some antioxidant capacity. There has been extensive research on its biological properties, most notably on its potential anti-cancer properties.
Some epidemiological studies suggest that consumption of this compound can reduce the incidence of cancer. And there are many studies looking at the effects of flavonoids on different types of cancer cells. In addition, there are some references to its therapeutic effects in combination with chemotherapy.
Consumption of apigenin and other flavonoids has attracted widespread attention for its role in reducing the risk of breast cancer. Some recent studies have found that women who regularly consume apigenin have a lower incidence of uterine cancer. But those studies only looked at apigenin, not other flavonoids. It is known to inhibit the growth of many types of cancer cells. Such as colon cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer, thyroid cancer, leukemia and pancreatic cancer.
There are different research results on the effect of apigenin consumption on chemotherapy agents. While the compound kills cancer cells, some cells become resistant to apigenin. In a study of leukaemia cells, the flavonoid was found to reduce the toxicity of the chemotherapy agent adriamycin. This means that the consumption of apigenin will increase the severity of the treatment of leukemia with this agent.
But apigenin showed a positive effect in fending off breast cancer cells. This compound increases the effectiveness of fluorouracil chemotherapy against cancer cells. From this point of view, consumption of this plant compound is helpful in the treatment of breast cancer
